iPhone leaks claim costs are going up next year, but upgrade prices for all Apple ranges have already become more expensive this month after Apple slashed trade-in values.
Spotted by MacRumors, Apple has cut exchange values for Macs, MacBooks, iPads, iPhones and Apple Watches by as much as 50% — the largest value reduction I can remember.
Buying an Apple iPhone 14 Pro on exchange just became more expensive
The most significant changes impact Macs and MacBooks, such as the iMac Pro only valued at a maximum of $600 (compared to $1,150 previously), and the MacBook Pro worth just $630 top end (compared to $850 previously). Apple also no longer accepts the Apple Watch Series 3 as a trade-in.
For iPhones, Apple cut trade-in prices by as much as $70, though the iPhone XS and XR values have surprisingly increased by $10. Meanwhile, Android smartphones are now almost worthless. For example, Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S22 Ultra (released in February, starting at $1200) is now worth $320, while a Google Pixel 6 Pro will net you $95, less than an iPhone 7 battery case. A Pixel 6 is valued at $55, roughly the same as an AirTag key ring.

The sweet spot in all these prices is for two-year-old devices, particularly for iPhones — with Apple targeting owners coming to the end of their contracts.
Before you rush out and trade your old device, however, note that these are all Up To prices, which means they apply to devices in pristine condition (beware caseless owners!). Note: Apple also warns:
“If the condition of the device is different from what you described, we’ll provide a revised value… If you reject it, we’ll cancel the trade-in, return your current device, and charge the original trade-in value to your card.”
My advice is to use a third-party service like eBay, Decluttr or Swappa where trade-in prices tend to be higher. That said, the simplicity of going direct to Apple still holds strong appeal for many.
Either way, unless your iPhone is on its last legs, I suggest waiting for the iPhone 15. Not only have leaks revealed a long list of eye-opening upgrades, but they are also expected to come with USB-C. When Apple changes ports (as happened with the last switch from the Dock Connector to Lightning), the value of previous models plummets. So if you want your new iPhone to be worth something in a few years’ time, wait for the switch to USB-C.
