You are blasting your favorite music AirPods, when someone decides to call you. The ringtone, which matches the volume of the music, plays so loud you wonder if it’s damaging your hearing. Unfortunately, you have no choice but to prepare your ears every time you use your AirPods. After all, there’s no way to separately control the tone volume of your wireless headphones when listening on the iPhone, right? There wasn’t – until now.

Update your iPhone first

Before using this feature, you must update your iPhone to iOS 16.4. It added the ability to control how alert tones sound on your AirPods, along with some other useful improvements. This new AirPods feature will only appear after you install the update.

How to lower the volume of the alert tone on AirPods

After installing iOS 16.4, connect AirPods to your iPhone. (You can do this by simply wearing AirPods.) Now open it SETTINGS on your iPhone and the settings page for your AirPods will appear between your name and Airplane Mode.

Tap the name of your AirPods, then select Accessibility. Move to the bottom and move Tone volume swipe left to decrease the volume of sound effects played on your AirPods.

What changes when you adjust the tone volume?

At the moment, this setting does a few things very well, but there are still some limitations you’ll have to live with. When you wear AirPods, a sound plays to let you know it’s connected to your iPhone. Lowering the tone volume will decrease the volume of this sound effect. When you receive calls or calls from other apps like WhatsApp, the ringer volume also decreases.

However, at the time of writing, this setting does not mute the message alerts. It also doesn’t reduce the effect of the key click sound that plays when you’re typing on the iPhone.

These limitations are disappointing, but hopefully Apple will address these shortcomings in a future update. Until then, keep your iPhone in silent mode to silence text alert sounds and button click sounds. You will still hear the connection sound effect and ringtone for calls.
