Spectrum News 1’s parent company, Charter Communications, Inc., is bringing its high-speed internet access to Wayne County.

Gigabit internet connectivity will arrive to nearly 1,400 rural, unserved homes and small businesses across the county.

Charter, Wayne County and the New York State Public Service will contribute over $14 million to the project.

“The big thing is a lot of students and I know a lot of people in agriculture are counting on it for a multitude of things,” said Philip Egynor, chairman of Wayne County Board of Supervisors. “[They need it for] communication from one farm to another, and there are multiple farms. And they can be able to communicate one farm to another and find out what’s going on and [find out] what the crops are doing at that place without being there and have remote access to the farms.”

“This investment will help close the digital divide in Wayne County and will bring gigabit broadband connectivity to thousands of residents and small businesses,” said Mark Fitchett, Charter’s regional vice president of operations. “We look forward to extending our network and serving new customers. Residents can choose this new connectivity for entertainment, and vital functions like remote work and telehealth.”

Construction is expected to begin in the coming months and be completed on a rolling basis in about two years. This will follow the completion of permitting and utility-pole attachment applications.
