Internet ban in Manipur extended till June 30

The Manipur government on Sunday extended the ban on internet services in the state for another five days to prevent any breach of peace and public order.

According to an official statement, the ban on internet services in the northeastern state, which has been plagued by ethnic clashes and violence, has been extended until 3 pm on June 30 to “prevent any breach of peace and public order in the country’s jurisdiction. State of Manipur”.

The government’s release also states that the ban on mobile internet services in the state has been extended due to “ongoing unrest”.

This is the third consecutive extension of the ban on internet services in the state.

Earlier on May 3, the Manipur government had suspended mobile internet services in the state amid ethnic violence and the ban has remained in place ever since.

On June 11, the government extended the ban until June 15, and then for another five days, from June 20 to June 25.

Manipur has been in the grip of ethnic violence for a month in the wake of a high court directive asking the state government to consider inclusion of the Maiti community in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).

The Center has been forced to deploy paramilitary forces as violence has escalated in the northeastern state.

Violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 after clashes broke out during a demonstration organized by the All Tribes Students’ Union (ATSU) to protest against the demand to include Meiteins in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
