SALT LAKE CITY – The Salt Lake City Criterium is back this weekend, a two-day series of professional bicycle racing and a “cycle road party” to Salt Lake City’s Granary District and Sugar House Park.

But event organizers say the return will close some roads in the city Saturday: 500 West and 600 West between 600 South and 800 South, and 700 South and 800 South between 400 West and 600 West will be closed from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The closure includes Lower 600 South and the I-15 Interstate.

The closures will allow for a mile-long anti-clockwise circuit around the area and a street festival in the Granary District on Saturday with local food vendors, live music and other activities. An additional bike race is planned for Sunday at Sugar House Park as part of the annual event.

The Salt Lake City Standard was launched in 2019 and continues to expand. This year’s race is the sixth of 10 stops on the 2023 National Criterium Series calendar. It offers a prize purse of just over $22,000 and points to the Cup Championship.

Saturday’s event will include more than 50 local vendors, “a variety of BBQ food trucks” and a beer garden with local breweries, according to event director Eric Gardiner.

“We are thrilled to bring the highest level of qualifying competition to Salt Lake City,” he said in a statement. “With our new courses we aim to challenge teams’ abilities and create different racing experiences every day.”

Although the road is closed, street parking is available in areas surrounding the event; However, according to the organizers, there are alternative means of transportation for those who plan to participate. A bike valet station will be set up at the intersection of 700 South and 500 West for those planning to bike to the event.
